I personally can't cope with large expanses of bare earth and need to compartmentalise my plot. I've scrounged a load of wood etc off skips and managed to fill almost the whole plot with raised beds now. In my first year I 2/3 cleared my plot and made 4 large 6.5 meter by 1.8 meter beds for the main big stuff - spuds, brassicas, alliums + roots and legumes + curcubits +sweet corn. During that summer I also knocked up 3 smaller beds 3 meters by 1 meter, and another 3 identical that winter making a row of 6 smaller beds. Finally this winter I cleared the rest of my plot and created 5 more 3 meter by 1.25 meter beds which are just the right size to rotate my xmas pressie mini poly tunnel over (more of a giant cloche to be honest). But I have left a token 2.5 meter by 5.5 meter brown open area! As the beds slowly rot I "might" not bother to replace them...
